Useless (or Overrated) Supplements

Many popular beliefs in cycling are not supported by the biochemical analysis of athletes suffering from cramps.

    Magnesium and Potassium (taken during the race): Although they are essential minerals, their loss through sweat is minimal compared to sodium. Taking them during the onset of a cramp rarely solves the problem immediately. Their utility is relegated to the recovery phase and basal maintenance, not the acute phase of the ride.

    B-Complex Vitamins in the acute phase: Useful for general energy metabolism, but lacking direct efficacy in preventing or resolving sudden involuntary contractions during a granfondo or time trial.
