We respond to a reader who asks us for information on a possible Shimano Ultegra Di2 12v group.

After the arrival of the new Shimano 105 di2 groupset, it is clear that the next group to be renewed will certainly be the Shimano Ultegra group.

Surely not because there is an official press release, but it is, to date, the oldest Shimano group, therefore the one that needs, more than others, a technical update.

The arrival of the 12v groups makes the Ultegra group now outdated.

It is an excellent group but the average user looks at certain things, precisely 12v or 13v, certainly not reliability or functionality.

Some patents, then, imply that Shimano is working on a new rear derailleur, but we believe that these innovations will not be part of the new Shimano Ultegra 12v group, which will instead follow the updates made with the new Shimano 105 di2 group.

The new Shimano Ultegra di2 12v groupset will be lighter, faster and also more expensive than the current Shimano Ultegra group.

The release, however, will not be shortly.

The 2023 racing bikes are coming out with the current Shimano Ultegra, so it is likely to come out during 2023, after January 2023 with actual availability no earlier than June 2023, perhaps with the first new 2024 racing bikes.

At the moment, therefore, it is useless to postpone a purchase to wait for the new Ultegra 12v, because it means waiting a whole year, at least.
