February 2026: Training Plan to Transform Base into Power

Road cycling training program for February 2026. Guide to Sweet Spot workouts, dynamic strength, and managing your first long spring rides.

How to Train on a Road Bike in FEBRUARY 2026: Complete Training Schedule

The month of February 2026 represents the "transformation phase" for every cyclist. While January was dedicated to Base Training and building aerobic foundations, February requires a change of pace. It is time to start "translating" muscle strength and base endurance into real power, increasing the average intensity of your rides and preparing your cardiovascular system for the tighter rhythms of spring.

The goal of this month is twofold: to increase your Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and to begin managing more intense rhythm variations, while still maintaining a solid base volume.
1. Methodological Guidelines for February 2026

This month, the programming evolves along three specific lines:

From Sweet Spot to Threshold: Sessions in Zone 3 (Tempo) evolve toward Sweet Spot and low Zone 4. This serves to "push" the threshold upward without accumulating the systemic stress of a maximal workout.

Dynamic Strength and Climbing Recall: The low-cadence climbing drills (SFR) of January give way to more dynamic strength work (60-70 RPM) and short bursts of explosive power to prepare your legs for sprints and steeper gradients.

Increased Specific Volume: As the days get longer (about 1 hour more daylight than in January), weekend rides must become more structured, inserting "race pace" segments within the long endurance ride.

2. Weekly Training Schedule (February 2026)

The program is structured on a progressive loading cycle, ideal for those aiming for the first Granfondos in March and April.
Week 1: Transition and Rhythm

Monday: Rest or 45' Mobility/Core Stability.

Tuesday (Aerobic Power - 1.5h - 2h): Zone 2 ride with 3 blocks of 10' in Zone 3 (Tempo) at 90-95 RPM.

Wednesday: Gym Strength or Cross-training. Last call for maximal strength before the competitive period.

Thursday (Sweet Spot - 1.5h - 2h): 20' Warm-up + 2 sets of 15' at 90% of your FTP. 8' recovery in Zone 1.

Friday: Active Recovery. 1h in Zone 1 (total flush).

Saturday (Hilly Ride - 2.5h): Route with short climbs (2-4 km). Tackle climbs in high Zone 3, focusing on a smooth, round pedal stroke.

Sunday (The Long Ride - 3.5h - 4h): Zone 2 base. During the last 60', insert three 5' intervals in Zone 4 (Threshold) to simulate late-race fatigue.

Week 2: Intensity and Threshold

Tuesday: Over-Under Work. 1.5h with 3 sets of 10' alternating: [2' @ 105% FTP + 2' @ 90% FTP].

Thursday: Dynamic Strength Climbs. 5 x 4' uphill at 65 RPM (Low Zone 4) + 2' agility (100 RPM) immediately after each interval.

Sunday: 4.5h Endurance Ride. Focus on nutrition: try consuming 60g of carbohydrates per hour to test your gut.

Week 3: Peak Performance (Max Loading)

Tuesday: VO2 Max Intervals. 1.5h with 2 sets of 5 reps: [1' in Zone 5 + 1' recovery in Zone 1].

Thursday: Tempo Ride. 2h in constant Zone 3 (80-85% FTP) on flat or rolling terrain.

Sunday: The "Long One" of the month. 5 hours in Zone 2 with two 20' climbs tackled at a steady Zone 4 pace.

Week 4: Recovery and Tapering

Monday-Friday: 50% volume reduction. Short (1h) and agile rides only.

Weekend: A 2.5h ride on Saturday with a few 15'' "openers" to keep the muscles snappy. Sunday rest or a social "coffee ride" with friends.

3. Practical Tips for February 2026

Winter's "Last Stand": February is often more unstable than January. If weather prevents a long ride, split the load: 1.5h on the trainer in the morning and 1.5h in the afternoon. It’s less mentally taxing and just as effective.

Weight Management: As intensity increases, the temptation to eat more is strong. Focus on quality: complex carbs before training and high-quality protein after. Avoid starting threshold (Z4) rides fasted.

Bike Maintenance: Salt and grit accumulated in January may have worn down your chain and brake pads. Do a full check: in February, speeds increase, and mechanical safety must be absolute.

Nightly Recovery: With higher average heart rates during workouts, sleep becomes your best supplement. Aim for at least 7-8 hours; supercompensation happens while you sleep, not while you pedal.

Coach's Tip of the Month: If you haven't planned your 2026 race calendar yet, do it now. Having a concrete goal in March or April will help you find motivation on those gloomy late-February days.
