Mahle Innovations at Eurobike Frankfurt 2025: Evolution of Lightweight E-Bike Systems

Eurobike Frankfurt 2025 provided Mahle SmartBike Systems, the division of the technology giant Mahle dedicated to electric bicycle systems, with the opportunity to present the latest evolutions of its solutions. The primary focus was on ultra-lightweight rear hub systems, aimed at replicating the riding experience of a traditional bicycle while providing electric assistance, and on expanding their connectivity and integration.

X30 and X40 Hub Systems: Increased Power and Integration

Mahle continued to refine its popular hub systems, introducing improvements that enhance their versatility and efficiency.

Lightweight and Powerful Motors: Refinements to the X30 and X40 series motors (the latter being the new nomenclature for the top-tier system, an evolution of the X20) were presented. These rear hub motors have been optimized to offer an even more advantageous weight-to-power ratio, with smoother and more natural torque delivery. The goal is to keep the system's weight extremely low, ideal for lightweight e-road, e-gravel, and urban e-bikes, without compromising the necessary assistance.

Integrated Batteries and Range Extender Options: Integrated batteries, often housed in the downtube, have been revised for higher energy densities while maintaining a discreet profile. This allows for greater ranges with compact dimensions. In addition, new generations of bottle-shaped range extenders with increased capacity were shown, easily attaching to the bicycle to significantly extend autonomy for longer rides.

Advanced Torque Sensors: The accuracy of integrated torque sensors has been further refined. This translates into more reactive assistance proportional to the force applied to the pedals, making the riding experience extremely natural, almost imperceptible in terms of transition between assisted and unassisted pedaling.

User Interface and Connectivity: The Mahle Ecosystem

A fundamental pillar of Mahle's strategy is the digital ecosystem surrounding its systems, providing advanced control and customization.

Smart Displays and Interfaces: The iWOC user interface, a distinctive Mahle feature, has seen new iterations with clearer haptic and visual feedback. Some systems now include options for integrated top tube displays or compatibility with external bike computers via ANT+ and Bluetooth, offering a wide range of ride data and display options.

Mahle My SmartBike App: The dedicated smartphone application has been enhanced. It allows detailed customization of assistance modes, adapting power delivery to individual preferences and route types. Features such as GPS tracking, system diagnostics, navigation, and over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates have been expanded, making e-bike management more intuitive and comprehensive.

Integration with Third-Party Components: Mahle has continued to promote the interoperability of its systems with a wide range of components from other manufacturers (drivetrains, brakes, etc.), offering bicycle manufacturers greater flexibility in design and assembly.

Design and Applications of Mahle Systems

The success of Mahle systems is also linked to their ability to integrate almost invisibly into bicycle frames.

Minimalist Aesthetics: The compact design of the hub motor and the possibility of fully integrating the battery allow manufacturers to create e-bikes with clean lines and proportions similar to those of traditional bicycles. This is particularly appreciated in the e-road and e-gravel segments, where reduced weight and aesthetics are key factors.

Versatile Application: Mahle systems are suitable for a wide range of electric bicycle types, from agile urban e-bikes to high-performance e-gravel and e-road bikes, as well as solutions for commuters seeking discreet yet effective assistance.

Mahle's presentations at Eurobike 2025 reaffirmed their commitment to the niche of lightweight and discreet e-bike systems, with a strong focus on natural riding experience and advanced connectivity, positioning themselves as a key player for electric bicycles that prioritize integration and fluidity.
