In July 2026, the rider's number one enemy is no longer moisture, but the combination of fine silica dust and extreme heat. This fine particulate acts as an abrasive paste with high penetration power on wiper seals, bushings, and linkage pivots. With rising temperatures, your MTB maintenance must shift toward "dry" chemical protection protocols to preserve the integrity of your components.

1. The "Dust Protocol": Suspension Under Stress

The arid climate of July dries out the lubricant film on the outer lips of the wiper seals, allowing dust to reach the stanchion.

    Decontamination: Use only electrostatic microfiber cloths. Avoid alcohol-based degreasers that dry out elastomers. Apply only a thin veil of fluoro-silicone fluid, cycle the fork three times, and wipe away all excess: the surface must feel dry to the touch to avoid attracting dust.

    Thermal Sag Compensation: With ambient temperatures over 30°C (86°F), internal pressure in forks and shocks increases. It is normal to measure a reduction in static travel. Bleed off 2 to 5 PSI to restore correct kinematics and prevent the bike from riding too high or feeling nervous on loose, dry rock gardens.

2. Drivetrain: Goodbye Oil, Hello Wax

The combination of traditional oil and silica dust is lethal to 12-speed drivetrains.

    Dry Lubrication: Eliminate all traces of "Wet" oils. Clean the chain with a non-polar solvent or ultrasonic cleaner and apply a graphene or PTFE-based solid lubricant. The solvent carrier evaporates in a few hours, leaving a dry molecular film that physically repels dust particles.

    Pulleys and Wear: Derailleur pulleys accumulate rings of compressed dirt. Remove and clean them every 150 km and check chain stretch: if it exceeds 0.5% (using a precision wear gauge), replace it immediately to avoid premature wear on the Narrow-Wide chainring profile.

3. Tubeless and Pressure: Fighting Thermal Evaporation

Heat trapped inside the tire due to rolling resistance on hot rocks accelerates the evaporation of latex-based sealants.

    Sealant Regeneration: In July, the effective lifespan of sealant drops below 4 weeks. Check levels by unscrewing the Presta valve or unseating a tire bead. If the latex has become a gummy film, clean the interior and inject 60-90 ml of sealant formulated for high temperatures.

    Dynamic Setup: Tire pressure increases while rolling on sun-baked rocks. Calculate a 0.1-0.2 bar decrease from your ideal riding pressure to compensate for the internal thermal expansion of the air.

4. Brakes and Vapor Lock Management

On long Alpine descents, braking systems reach temperatures exceeding 250°C (482°F).

    Mandatory Bleeding: Hydraulic fluid, especially if hygroscopic (DOT 4/5.1), absorbs micro-moisture that evaporates under heat, creating "Vapor Lock" (spongy lever or no bite). A full bleed is a mandatory July protocol.

    Brake Pads: Replace organic pads with sintered or metallic variants. They offer superior friction coefficient stability at high temperatures, ensuring consistent braking even after minutes of heavy use.

5. Linkage Check-up

    Pivots and Torque: Due to high-torque vibrations and thermal expansion of materials, rear linkage pivots tend to loosen. Use a torque wrench to verify the manufacturer-specified torque values (usually 10-15 Nm) on all pivot points.
