ebike Scott LUMEN 2023 road test ride review all you need to know
An E-MTB that weighs just 15.5kg. Yes, you read right. The SCOTT Lumen takes the platform of the world's fastest XC/Trail frame and adds completely silent and powerful electric assist, all while maintaining SCOTT's legendary light DNA.
The riding sensation is like that of a normal bike: there is no need to think about longer braking distances, pedaling resistance or weight, as it is also possible to ride the bike with the assistance deactivated. This is an E-Bike for a mountain biker, with all the benefits of a regular bike, now with added assist to get you uphill faster allowing you to enjoy riding further and even longer.
POWERFUL AND COMPACT ENGINE
From the beginning, the goal was to create the lightest possible E-Bike and, after many studies, it was quickly clear that the TQ HPR50 motor could be the ultimate solution for the SCOTT eRIDE R&D team .
TQ is a German company founded in 1994 specializing in electrical components in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, medical and infrastructure. With the HPR50, they have simply rewritten the rules, offering an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio of 1.8kg per 50Nm. With a diameter of 8cm, TQ has innovated by using a harmonic gear system. This allows for a reduction in size while increasing the accuracy of the system. This results in a lighter bike, better integration, while reducing clearance for a more natural pedal feel. This technology also enables system noise reduction for a truly natural experience. After all, you're outdoors to, well, enjoy the outdoors.
2 BATTERIES, 1 INTERNAL, 1 EXTERNAL
Lumen is equipped with an internal 360Wh battery which can be further supplemented by an external 160Wh range extender. Easily attached to the front bottle mount with our unique SCOTT designed quick release mount, the range extender features a slim design and low weight, which means minimal impact on bike handling.
Thanks to TQ's electronic expertise, the HPR50 battery, combined with the range extender, guarantees maximum performance until it runs out. The TQ uses specific battery cells to ensure that both the battery and the range extender continue to operate at full power, even when reaching a reduced capacity. The system can be charged with the range extender in place, the smart charger prioritizes charging the bike battery first so you're never caught out when you head out to ride. The charging time is also fast, the main battery can reach 80% in two hours of charging.
2 BOTTLE HOLDERS
Unlike most FULL E-Bikes, on the Lumen you don't have to choose between the range extender or a water bottle, between longer rides or staying hydrated. Thanks to the integrated shock absorber, there is space for both an external battery and water.A sliding attachment system is available as an option, which allows you to quickly replace the bottle cage with the range extender or vice versa, allowing both to be easily transported during longer rides.
SUSPENSION SCHEME
The Lumen uses the same suspension layout as the SCOTT Spark, the bike that won two world championships. From the first time we used the flex pivot layout, we fell in love with it. Now, a few years later, we still believe that for technical cross country and fast singletrack, it's the best approach. The suspension layout of the Lumen has a very specific and proven kinematics and a lower unsprung mass. Using a flex pivot in the seat stay is an ideal solution for bikes in this range of travel and allows us to keep a very light system while maintaining optimal suspension performance.
INTEGRATED SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY
The Spark debuted an integrated shock absorber frame platform, and the Lumen follows the same principle. Why integrated? Well, first things first, we think it's great. But if we take a deeper look, this approach allows us to fine-tune the suspension characteristics without sacrificing weight. And when developing the world's lightest E-MTB, every gram counts. For optimal performance, the transfer of forces must be as direct as possible. What we want to avoid is inefficient directional movements, in other words, lateral movements (sideways to the direction of travel) as the shock is being compressed. Having an integrated shock absorber allows us to improve this in several ways. First, the frame structure around the shock absorber and the
Trunnion mount can be designed to be much stiffer, reducing movement and promoting more efficient force transfer. We can also add much larger pads to the seat tube pivot, further reinforcing this area and reducing any unnecessary movement. While these may seem like small improvements, the sum of their parts translates into more efficient cushioning performance. In addition, the shock absorber is fully protected from any foreign elements. Rainy day? Don't worry, your shock absorber will continue to perform at its best regardless.
Our integrated suspension technology also helps us design frames with lower shock placement that lowers the center of gravity. As a result, the bike benefits from improved handling and a more stable and confidence-inspiring ride for the end user.
FRAME DESIGN
Taking a cue from the Spark, the goal was a riding position that feels just like a traditional bike. We wanted to get a bike that would allow us to descend like a trail bike without sacrificing anything and at the same time a trail bike that could fly up the climb then do it all again on the next descent. The TQ motor allows us to maintain a standard Q factor with a 55mm chainline, exactly the same as the Spark. This allows us to do some interesting things. First, we can ensure good tire clearance without sacrificing stiffness, which is crucial when it comes to power transfer. Secondly, it offers exactly the same rider position and pedal width as a regular bike.
SAG
Setting the SAG is also easy, as you can see what SAG you're using via an indicator on one of the connecting rods. Do you want to know if you are using the whole excursion? Peek through a port in the seat tube where you can see where your o-ring is. You can easily move it down to reset it.
COCKPIT
The Lumen 900 SL and 900 models feature Syncros' Fraser IC DC handlebar. The designers worked on the shape to allow the cables to run under the handlebars and around the sides of the stem before disappearing into the headset to keep it clean and efficient. This avoids twisting or kinking of the cables and provides a minimalistic front view. In fact, when the system was developed, the e-bike cables were already thought of in the design. All of our handlebars and stems come with multiple options for computer, light and camera mount both above and below the bar.
The 910 and Contessa models feature a more standard bar and stem designed to work with internal cable routing. Syncros provides all contact points on the bike for the best riding experience.
REMOTE COMMAND
The system can be managed via a minimalist control on the handlebar combined with the display integrated into the top tube. The modes are easy to change and, thanks to the ergonomic positioning on the handlebars, can be easily controlled while driving, as well as when using Walk Mode.
CHECK YOUR E-BIKE
The TQ App offers real benefits and is easy to use. It's simple to connect, customize and control your e-bike with the TQ E-Bike App. The bike comes with a suggested motor tune, with the app you can tune your drive unit to save battery life or maximize horsepower. You can change the pedal response for quicker motor response or more progressive for a more natural feel. Finally, it is possible to customize the display, changing the order and number of screens available, activate and deactivate the control sounds, etc.
No hum, no extra noise - simple essential information for when you and your E-Bike are on the road, so you can ride more and enjoy the moment.
