The Van Nicholas Astraeus is a limited-edition titanium road bike.
Dutch company Van Nicholas has updated its flagship Astraeus road bike, which now features hydroformed tubes, a fully integrated front end, UDH, and a T47 bottom bracket. The new Astraeus is described by Van Nicholas as "the evolution of our ultimate titanium road bike." A hydroformed construction was chosen to reduce the total material used without compromising strength or durability.
The most stressed parts of the frame - the head tube, bottom bracket, dropouts, and seat tube assembly - are "cast" or "3D cast" in one piece, to ensure maximum strength and stiffness. It is unclear whether these are 3D printed parts or actually cast. Regardless, the shaped parts give the frame a distinct look and are said to improve durability.
The tubes are shaped to maximize efficiency in some areas and flexibility in others. For example, the top tube transitions from a diamond-shaped cross-section near the head tube to a flatter, more vertically flexible profile near the seat tube.
The Astraeus' geometry is pure race, with a mid-size frame featuring a 73.5° seat tube angle and 72° head tube angle. Short 415mm chainstays promote quick acceleration and agile handling. Reach increases by just 13mm across the five sizes, from 379mm in the XS to 392mm in the XL. This means the fit is long and aggressive in the smaller sizes and much more accessible in the larger sizes.
The Astraeus features fully integrated lines up front, and the frame is compatible with both mechanical and electronic Shimano Di2 and wireless groupsets. Like most new frames, the Astraeus features a UDH derailleur hanger and a threaded T47 bottom bracket. Presumably to better facilitate the complex seat tube assembly design, the Astraeus uses a less common 31.6mm internal diameter seat tube. Fortunately, it accepts a standard round seat post held in place with an external seat clamp. Van Nicholas specifies a maximum tire clearance of 32c for the Astraeus.
The Astraeus comes with a lifetime warranty and is limited to just 50 frames, with prices starting at €3,999 for a frameset.
