German technology specialist TQ has unveiled a revolutionary new system that redefines the category at Eurobike 2025: the TQ-HPR40 drive system for road and gravel bikes. Weighing just 1,170 grams, the new TQ-HPR40 motor delivers 40 Nm of torque and up to 200 watts of power, while the system around it enables an unprecedented level of integration. Taking advantage of the benefits of TQ’s patented harmonic transmission, the HPR40 drive system enables the creation of extremely light yet powerful, nearly silent e-bikes with near-instant engagement and a natural ride. While e-bikes have carved out a niche for themselves in the mountain, trekking, and urban cycling worlds over the past decade, there has been little discussion about a dedicated e-road bike segment until now. But why? As avid cyclists of all disciplines, the team at TQ couldn’t help but try to answer this question and quickly realized that there were three main issues: design, feel, and the 25 km/h limit. Road bikes are incredibly sleek and capable machines, with aesthetics that simply don’t mesh with the giant down tubes and bulky bottom brackets that define most e-bikes. Additionally, the weight and functionality of most e-bike systems drastically alter and distort a bike’s characteristics, kinematics, and feel while pedaling. And finally, if you’re trying to average 35 km/h, what’s the point of a system that replaces support with aerodynamic drag at 25 km/h and above? As it turns out, solving these three problems was exactly the challenge TQ’s team of cycling-minded engineers set out to do, and TQ’s patented Harmonic Pin-Ring (HPR) drivetrain proved to be the perfect tool for the job.
The key to TQ’s e-bike drivetrains is the patented Harmonic Pin-Ring (HPR) drivetrain, which draws on the German technology company’s decades of experience designing and developing electric motors for robots, satellites, space stations, and Mars rovers. Want to use the remote buttons on the handlebars to turn on the lights? Go ahead! Want to shift up with a short press of the left button and down with a long press of the right button? Strange choice, but feel free to do so. At launch, the TQ-HPR40 drive system is compatible with Shimano, Sram, Garmin, Hammerhead, Sigma and Wahoo electronic components. But what kind of rider is the new system aimed at?

TQ-HPR40 Drive System Details
The System
Building on the success of TQ’s lightweight, full-power systems such as the HPR50, HPR60 and HPR120, the all-new TQ-HPR40 drive system is designed for e-road and gravel riders. With a total weight of just 2,700 grams including a 290Wh battery and an incredibly compact form factor, the revolutionary new system enables bike manufacturers to create super-light e-road and gravel bikes that look, feel and sound like analog bikes, but will take you further. Additionally, the TQ-HPR40 drive system offers a level of third-party integration unprecedented in the e-bike market.
The Drive Unit
The HPR40 Drive Unit weighs just 1,170 grams and offers up to 40 Nm of torque and up to 200 Watts of peak power, with the highest torque density on the market, in an ultra-compact and super-light package. But for TQ it's not about the numbers, it's about the riding experience. Believing that less is more applies not only in terms of size, weight and noise, but also in terms of ease of use, the system intentionally offers only three riding modes, fully customizable via the TQ app. In addition, the Q-factor of the drive unit is identical to that of analog bikes, resulting in the same natural and efficient riding sensation, an aspect often overlooked when it comes to e-bikes.
The Battery
TQ batteries are known for their relatively small size and weight, which allows e-bikes to be designed that look and have the same kinematics as analog bikes. The new 290Wh battery is no exception and has been specifically developed to power the HPR40 drive unit with maximum efficiency in the smallest possible format. Weighing just 1,460g, it offers the best weight-to-capacity ratio in its class thanks to the highest energy density on the market. Battery capacity can be increased by a further 160Wh for epic all-day rides with an optional range extender the size of a 500ml water bottle.
The controls
The smallest parts of the TQ-HPR40 system are the “display” and the ingeniously hidden remote. While the remote consists of several buttons completely hidden under the handlebar tape, the “display” is neatly integrated into the end of the handlebar. The “display” is in brackets because it is not a screen, but rather a neatly integrated on/off button with a row of elegant LEDs that show the battery charge status and the support mode selected by the rider.
A Masterpiece of Integration
The elegant integration of the physical parts of the TQ-HPR40 is only part of the story. The other part is the superior electronics integration offered by the TQ Smart Box, remote and TQ App. Powered by the TQ Smart Box, elegantly hidden inside the frame, the TQ-HPR40 offers an open system architecture for integrating third-party components such as electronic shifting, lighting and more, as well as an open interface for OEM customization and full compatibility with Sram and Shimano buttons. But that's not all. Any system integrated into the bike, such as a lighting system, can be powered directly and continuously from the main battery. In addition, the TQ team ensured that the relevant data from the system's sensors, including the input power so, can be transmitted via ANT+ to a cycle computer, eliminating the need for a separate power meter, for example.
Harmonic Pin-Ring Drive
The Harmonic Pin-Ring Drive (HPR) is the result of TQ's decades of experience in developing and designing electric motors for robots, satellites, space stations and Mars rovers. By redesigning and re-engineering the patented Harmonic Pin-Ring technology, used in real space applications, to adapt it to the needs of cyclists, TQ has created an extremely lightweight drive unit (1,170 grams) that has virtually no engagement delay and allows for smooth and silent integration with the e-bike system.
Taking full advantage of the compact size and technological advantages of the HPR drive, TQ has developed a lightweight and extremely compact structure, integrated around the bottom bracket, consisting of very few components and allowing the motor to almost completely disappear behind the chainring. Additionally, the HPR drivetrain eliminates the use of sprockets, which cause friction, noise, wear, and potential breakage points. The absence of sprockets allows for e-bikes to sound, look, and ride like analog bikes. Finally, an e-bike equipped with the HPR40 pedals like an analog bike when the drive unit is disengaged, thanks to the integrated freewheel and internal anti-friction components.
