From a physiological point of view and biochemical alpha lipoic acid (also called "thioctic acid", "ProtoGen", "POF: pyruvate oxidation factor," "L. casei acetate factor") is considered a pseudovitamin.

In other words, it has a vitamin-like and, although in small amounts, can be produced by the human body. In the human body the functions of lipoic acid are manifold. Alpha lipoic acid a substance labeled with antioxidant properties/antiradicals that are carried out both at the level of cell membranes both within cells. The antiradical action of alpha lipoic regards the direct neutralization of some types of free radicals and, indirectly, the regeneration and strengthening of vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione and coenzyme Q10. Another action of alpha lipoic acid, as a coenzyme, is to transform the pyruvate (metabilita glucose) in acetate and make it available for the production of energy in the Krebs cycle. Alpha lipoic acid thus facilitates the metabolism of sugars in an energetic sense. Its action is enhanced and strengthened by vitamins B1 and B6 and pyruvate itself. The action of alpha lipoic acid on sugar has important consequences as the possibility of supporting the normalization in situations of hyperglycemia (diabetes) and decrease the quantity of sugars which can be converted into fat. For this reason, alpha lipoic acid is used in Germany as a supplement complementary therapies of diabetes complications (eg, diabetic neuropathy). In sports and not, can be used to facilitate the reduction of fat mass and in performance of resistance to "better carburize" the consumption of sugars and better neutralize the free radicals that are formed during physical stress. Due to its chemical structure alpha lipoic acid is able to bind to potentially toxic metals (eg, mercury derived from dental amalgam, heavy metals present in a severely contaminated environment, etc. ..) thus playing a detoxifying especially at liver. Keep in mind that nature pharmacokinetic studies have shown that oral administration of alpha lipoic acid determines the maximum absorption of the substance in the blood after 30-60 minutes of ingestion.
